Second Grade - Fay Holland hollandf@k12tn.net
Hi my name is Gloria Fay Holland.
I was borned on August 1, 1959 in Livingston, Tennessee.
I am seventh of eleven children.
I have 3 brothers and 7 sisters. I attended Livingston
Elementary and Livingston Academy.
While at Livingston
Academy, I had perfect attendance for 4 years. I was a member
of the Beta Club Honor Society, Science Club, Home Economics Club,
VOE and I worked in the library.
I was the first in my family to attend college. I have always
enjoyed school. I feel that a
great education is very important.
I received my B. S.
in Elementary Education in March 1981.
I received my Master's in Elementary Education in August
1988. I received both
my degrees from Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville.
I
started my teaching career in March of 1983.
I taught Chapter I Math at Dodson's Branch
Elementary in Jackson County.
Then in September of 1983, I came to Carthage to work at
Carthage Elementary
School. I taught the CDC
Class. This was my first
opportunity to work with special needs children.
I had to learn sign language so that I could communicate with
my deaf student. Then in January 1984, I was hired to teach second
grade at Gordonsville Elementary School in Gordonsville.
I taught there for a year and a half.
In 1985, I came to Forks River,
I have been here ever since.
I have taught second grade here for twenty-six years. In 2000, I was
recognized by the Smith County 4-H Clubs as Volunteer of the Year.
Both my children, Jonathan and Heather, were in 4-H. I
attended 4-H camp, 4-H Congress in Nashville and various 4-H events
and activities. In 2004, I was honored as a distinguished educator
by Who's Who Among
America's Teachers. My photo
and bio were published in the 2004-05 edition. In 2006, I was awarded
the honor of Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year.
This was one of the most rewarding days of my life.
My husband, son and daughter were there when I received this
award. I received a plaque,
$100 gift card and $1,000 for my school. We used it to purchase a
large projector screen for the stage to show slide shows and movies. For the last twelve
years, I have truly enjoyed working with the Smith County Pride of
the Upper Cumberland Marching Band and the Tennessee Tech Marching Band.
I am affectionately known as "Mama" Holland.
In December of 2007, I was given a TTU watch and made an
honorary member of the TTU band.
I still have and will always treasure this watch.
My band "kids" will always have a special place in my heart.
I have enjoyed traveling to Missouri, South and North
Carolina, Georgia, and Florida with the Smith County High School
Band.
In December 1978, I
was married to David "Coon" Holland of the Bagdad Community of
Jackson County. We have two children. Jonathan is married to the former Chelsea Smith of Carthage.
They have been married for three years.
Chelsea is teaching general music at Baxter Elementary School
in Baxter.
My daughter, Heather Michelle, is a graduate of Tennessee State
University in Nashville. She
graduated on May 2, 2011 with a BA in Criminal Justice.
She wants to work for the Tennessee Bureau of Investigations
upon graduation in May of 2011. I am very proud of both Heather and
Jonathan. Both have worked
extremely hard to earn their place on the Dean's
List every
semester and graduate summa cumde laude. They have both received perfect attendance awards for
thirteen years of school (K-12
grades). I feel very fortunate that both of them went to college and
are trying to make the best of their lives. On May 6, 2011, I became the proud grandmother of a beautiful baby girl, Kadence Elizabeth Holland. She weighed 7 pounds, 8 ounces and was 19 1/2 inches long. She arrived at 7:23 pm. I look forward to babysitting her.
